John Smedley dates right back to 1784, and can make claim to be the oldest manufacturing factory in the entire world ! Back then the John Smedley factory was spinning cotton and producing muslin fabric, but by the mid 1820's the site was making use of one of the world's first industrial-scale knitting machines to create more complex products, including the legendary Long Johns.
